Subscription Launches & Holiday Travels…Oh My!

So, I am a bit late on an update post and certainly intend to make good on my promise in my last post to write about Maura Murray part two. I got a bit behind on my blog, but all for good reasons. I traveled for the Holiday’s, met someone new who I adore and rescued a new puppy who we named Salem. I want to take a moment to reflect on the past few months and give some recognition before I dig further into the Maura Murray case.

First, I launched my subscription box on Cratejoy, and to my surprise it has not only been more successful than I dreamed it could be, it has also been SO much fun. I have been reading to get to the know the victims and learn how they can be a part of my box in a meaningful way. I have been creating new boxes, attending charity events and even reaching out to different Podcasts for support/to show my support. In fact, when I launched the bookstore I reached out to my favorite Podcast: True Crime Garage to ask if I could put their logo on my website, and I got an email back not only inviting me to do just that, but they were very supportive and wished me luck in this journey. OMGGGG what??? Seriously, I listen to them obsessively and they were supportive of my small business. I was doing a little freak out, I must admit. This new adventure is doing for me……exactly what I had hoped. I am connecting with other people about the things that I am passionate about. I received my first review on my subscription box, and I got 5 stars by one reader who took a chance on me. When you live your passion you certainly feel energized, so with that energy I took some time mapping out my boxes for 2018. I have got some really good cases to talk about. Case by case, whether murdered or vanished we are going to delve into it TOGETHER. And…along the way, we are going to enjoy some Horror as well.

keep reading, support your local authors….and be sure to check us out on Cratejoy!!!!

Maura Murray – Part One

The Maura Murray case has always intrigued me, but I wasn’t as invested in it until my oldest daughter began college a state away from me. When my girls were younger and they would head to CA to visit their dad for the summer I would have anxiety, like the debilitating type. I was sure they would be snatched from a Walmart and disappear across the border never to be seen again. I would dread the summer months as they approached knowing I would have to send them. I would dream of any way that I could keep them tracked at all times so if anything insidious lurking in the shadows so much as touched a hair on their head I would know and could react.

I was totally and completely irrational, and it took a long time for me to be able to sit in the silence and let go and know if we were to become a victim of a crime, tracking my girls at all times wouldn’t stop the dark course the universe had set us on. So, that is what you tell yourself logically right, you can’t do anything about it so no need to track, hover and over parent. But what about when something insidious happens and there are no answers, in the case of Maura Murray she has been missing for a long time the universe just swallowed her up. The aftermath has been, I am sure truly unbearable for her family, not only is she missing, but the family has been exposed, judged and accused of being that very insidious shadow that sent her running into hiding.

So, let’s set this up…on a cold night Maura goes missing, after crashing her car on a dark snow covered road. She didn’t have an over protective parent tracking her (but would that have mattered). She crashed, she was seen by a couple witnesses on the side of the road and within 15 minutes of crashing that car she vanished….without a trace. For the Murray’s this is my worst fear come to life…and all these years later, there is STILL no trace of Maura. Some say she began a new life in Canada, some say the police covered up their crime suggesting they killed her, some believe she met someone on the road that night who murdered her.

I have spent the last several months delving into this case for which we still have no answers. I watched the new Oxygen series, and even joined the Crime Club set up to work with Oxygen and CrimeCon as an armchair detective to help. I have scoured the internet for more clues to help get this family out of their agony.

In the end, I don’t have any more information than I did when I embarked on this journey. I still have my irrational fear and Maura Murray is STILL missing. I truly believe, someone out there knows something, we just have to apply pressure to the right people. In my next post, I am going to update with a timeline and some facts about the case. I hope you are as intrigued as I am, I hope you will be invested too….and will engage in some dialogue with me about this case. Vanished….swallowed whole……let’s find Maura.

The True Crime Me

I am Marisa and I am a True Crime and horror addict. I am also a single mom and fierce dog lover. I grew up in a single parent home with my mom and my sister.

All single mom’s knows that free time is scarce and when you do get it, you often are catching up on dishes and not reading True Crime books. However, I grew up in a unique home, with a mom who would multi-task to the extreme. She easily accomplished more than any mom I’ve ever known. She also never failed to tuck me in at night and while I may have been a bit needy with my requests for longer back rubs, my mom never denied me. Instead, she read me Stephen King books while helping me fall asleep. She did her mom thing while doing her own self-care. (If you’ve gotten to the point in this blog post where you do not agree with her parenting, this is not the blog for you.)

My first horror experience was not only at bedtime but none other than Stephen King’s, IT! So where does this lead, it leads to the ability to easily fall asleep to the ID channel and not being afraid of the dark. And….it fostered a True Crime / Horror addiction. So, now here I am taking a new journey with Black Heart Books to connect with other people just like me, who like to immerse themselves in the details and understand the most heinous of crimes, solve cold cases or locate the missing. It isn’t about the crime when you really think about it, it’s about the lives of the victims and the fascinating events that intersected their life with a monster. So, as we embark on this journey you will learn more about me, True Crime and Horror and hopefully make some new friends. Be sure to follow us at http://www.blackheartbooks.org we have some new and exciting subscription boxes launching soon which will take you on a unique adventure!
